Texas Holdem Cash Game Tips

It seems like every poker site has SNG tips or MTT tips, but there is not much good information about Cash Games. Since the UIGEA passed last year there has been a major migration of poker players from the tournament format to cash games. The problem is most players lack a basic understanding of cash game strategy. They are playing tournament strategy because they don’t know cash game strategy.

Below are a few basic cash game tips to separate you from the rest of the players.

Poker Cash Game Tip #1 - Cash games and tournaments are different.

It almost sounds silly to say it, but it needs said. In a cash game your goal is to make money. That changes your strategy in that you don’t have to bust everyone at the table as you would in a tournament. You can afford to be patient because the blinds never increase. This also means you don’t need to vigorously defend your blinds every time. Allow the player to play the part of the bully and then punish him when you have a hand.

Poker Cash Game Tip #2 - -EV plays

In a tournament, you must make a certain amount of –EV plays and coin flips because you don’t have the luxury of static blinds. In cash game there is little need to do this. You can wait on you big hands, trap players, and punish them when the time is right.

Poker Cash Game Tip #3 - Player Control

This is another simple but overlooked piece of advice I give everyone I tutor. You are in control. In a SNG or MTT you are stuck at a table with maniacs and rocks with no where to go. In a cash game if you sit down at a table and it’s a table of maniacs and you are uncomfortable, get up. If you’ve played at a table for an hour and your table image is bad, get up. If nothing is going your way, get up.

These are a few simple tips that will give you an edge over the other players sitting at the table. Right now the cash games in online poker are juicier than ever. Tournaments are fun, but cash games are where most of the money is.
